Medicaid Pre-Planning: What Every Traditional Estate Planner Should Know

Lori Leu and Dianne Reis

As the cost of long term care rises, increasing numbers of middle class clients reach their elder years with insufficient assets to pay for long term care, and often find out too late that they are no longer healthy enough to purchase long term care insurance. Professional advisors who don’t specialize in Medicaid planning play a valuable role in helping these clients maintain their Medicaid eligibility and streamline the application process.  Lori Leu and Dianne Reis will discuss the planning and assistance that traditional estate planners and other financial professionals can provide for clients who may need Medicaid nursing home benefits in the intermediate future. Attendees will also learn about financial and legal strategies that should be avoided for clients who may be relying on public benefits to finance the cost of long term care. Lori Leu is an Elder Law attorney based in Plano and serving the North Texas area.  Lori graduated from Kansas State University. Harvard Law School, and has more than twenty-four years of legal experience.  Lori practiced for nearly twenty years in the area of commercial litigation and telecommunications.  However, this work did not meet her need to help others on an individual basis.  For several years, while continuing her law practice, she attended seminary at SMU’s Perkins School of Theology.  After returning from a year-long sabbatical overseas with her family, she decided to change her focus to elder law.  Lori now provides legal guidance and representation primarily to senior adults and their families. She has a genuine passion for helping people who are facing incapacity and long-term care needs.  Lori focuses her practice on all legal issues affecting seniors and long-term care planning.   Dianne Reis has an estate planning and probate practice in Plano, Texas, which includes estate tax, guardianship and Medicaid planning.  She is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, Certified in Elder law by the National Elder Law Foundation and the author of Texas Estate Planning, published by James Publishing Company.    She received her J.D. with Honors from the University of Texas School of Law and an A.B. in Economics from Harvard University. She is a frequent speaker to attorneys and other professionals in her area of expertise.
